Thalassemia treatment requirements:
1 patient costs $1000-$2000 USD per year to manage, cost is all inclusive of quality care, blood screening, iron chelation drugs and much more.
Every year, approximately 5,000 new babies are born with Thalassemia in Pakistan. Managing this illness costs around $1000-$2000 USD per patient annually depending on their age and current condition. It’s important to note that Thalassemia treatment involves the transfusion of red blood cells, not whole blood. Thalassemics lack sufficient red blood cells but produce other components of blood normally. Blood transfusions are crucial to maintain the child’s hemoglobin within the normal range of 11-14 g/dl. Therefore, transfusions should be administered when the hemoglobin level drops to around 70% and raised to approximately 100%.
However, repeated transfusions lead to iron accumulation in organs like the liver, heart, and endocrine glands, causing potential damage. To maintain a safe iron level, thalassemia patients regularly rely on the drug ‘Desferal’.
Improper treatment of Thalassemia results in the spleen, responsible for destroying red blood cells, also targeting young red blood cells. Consequently, transfusions become less effective, often requiring spleen removal, known as ‘Splenectomy’.
We urgently call upon compassionate individuals like you to donate funds that can save lives. Your generous contributions will support proper treatment, including transfusions, iron management, and necessary medical interventions. By donating, you become a vital lifeline for Thalassemia patients, helping them access the care they urgently need and ensuring a brighter future.
Together, we can make a significant impact in the lives of Thalassemia patients. Your donation will not only provide financial assistance but also offer hope and improve the quality of life for these individuals and their families.
